Brighton Rock - 2010

Brighton Rock was originally released in a black and white version in 1947, but this 2010 adaptation  is the story of Pinkie Brown, a mythological teenage gang leader involved in the all too real England gangland subculture wars of the 1960’s between the Mods and the Rockers.

True to the character “Pinkie” in the the original novel, Pinkie (played by Sam Riley in this version, and by Richard Attenborough in the earlier version) commits murder and tries to escape justice by marrying Rose, the only person who knows the truth. Rose (played by Andrea Riseborough in this version and Carol Marsh in the first version) is a religious woman, but in her marriage appears to undergo something of change in her moral or values perspective on life.

In the earlier film, Pinkie is depicted as brutal character who thinks little of death and killing. As the movie progresses and he becomes more confused in the gang wars and in his own insecurities as a gang leader, Pinkie becomes progressively more violent, until that violence proves to be his downfall.

In the more recent film,  Pinkie’s character while still violent in nature, has a more dark character that enables those watching the movie to consider some of the  deeper values being explored, including the place of evil and religion in society.

This recent version of Brighton Rock is establishing itself as a movie that is arousing interest, both due to the murder thriller genre it belongs in and perhaps partially due to the quality of its predecessor, which this version may owe some of  its success.
